Since 2022, MSF has been observing the health challenges faced by individuals traversing the Darién Gap, the natural boundary separating Colombia and Panama, as they journey towards the United States and Canada.
What impact has this had on the local community?
- Local health centers have been inundated with consultations due to the surge in population.
How many migrants have crossed the Darién Gap this year?
- Approximately 260,000 migrants have made the trek thus far, as reported by the Panamanian migration authority.
“Our collaboration will offer vital healthcare to those in dire circumstances,” remarked Estrella. “We applaud this decision and are dedicated to partnering closely with the Panamanian Ministry of Health to deliver comprehensive healthcare to both migrants navigating the jungle and the local community.”
Who comprises the MSF team in Darién?
- The team includes doctors, nurses, psychologists, and social workers.
In addition to Darién, MSF conducts medical and humanitarian operations to aid migrants in various parts of the Americas, including Central America and Mexico, adjusting to evolving migration routes.
Until September 2024, MSF backed a response in Costa Rica centered on supporting migrants.
