On 9 August, a 31-year-old trainee doctor was raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical college and hospital in Kolkata, sparking protests nationwide. The case was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on 13 August, and further violence erupted on 14 August at the hospital.
