In anticipation of the presidential elections scheduled for Sunday 28 July 2024, Amnesty International has condemned the escalating repression that has marked the election period and raised the alarm about the situation in the country over the coming weeks. Ana Piquer, Americas Director at Amnesty International, said:
What has been happening in Venezuela?
- The state authorities in Venezuela have committed grave human rights violations.
- More than 25% of the population has fled the country due to a complex humanitarian emergency.
- The months leading up to the election have seen attacks on civic space and arbitrary detentions.
What does Amnesty International demand?
“We are calling for the immediate release of arbitrarily detained individuals and an end to further repression,” said Ana Piquer, Americas Director at Amnesty International.
What is the stance on human rights defenders?
Ana Piquer emphasized the need for international support for human rights defenders in Venezuela who are protecting the vulnerable.
Piquer also highlighted the importance of renewing the mandates of the UN Fact-finding Mission on Venezuela and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights during the next UN Human Rights Council session.
