Escalating Crackdown on Human Rights in Mali
Malian authorities have come under fire for the arbitrary detention of opposition leaders, including Youssouf Daba Diawara.
Why were they detained?
- Youssouf Daba Diawara was charged with “opposing legitimate authority” for participating in an unauthorized protest.
- 11 opposition leaders were arrested and charged with “plotting against state authority” and “opposing legitimate authority”.
Amnesty International’s Call to Action
Samira Daoud, Regional Director for West and Central Africa, urges the immediate release of Diawara and the other detained politicians.
Background
Diawara was arrested for participating in a protest against electric outages and inflation.
The transitional period in Mali, following a coup d’état in September 2020, continues to face challenges and tensions with regional organizations. Amnesty International demands that the authorities respect the human rights of all individuals.
