Healing the Scars of War
We opened the Al-Wahda hospital in April 2018 to address the urgent need for surgical and post-surgical care for individuals wounded during the war. Discover how we transformed 40 newly built rooms into isolation units for COVID-19 patients.
Why was the hospital established?
- Al-Wahda hospital was established in response to the critical healthcare needs of the community in Mosul.
- The main healthcare facilities in the city were severely damaged during the war, leaving the population with limited access to medical services.
What inspired the transformation?
As the hospital began receiving war-wounded patients, it became evident that the medical needs of the population were vast. Subsequently, the hospital expanded its bed capacity and admission criteria to cater to more patients.
“During the war, we were displaced many times, our days were dark and sad. When we finally went back home after the war, nothing was working as before,” shared Taha Hussein, MSF health promoter at Al-Wahda. The healthcare sector in the city was severely impacted by the conflict.
